Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 3 hours

Yield: 10-12 Rolls

Apple Pie all rolled up into a fluffy, soft, doughy, roll bursting with buttery cinnamon flavor, and smeared with a cream cheese glaze! These Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls will not disappoint!

Ingredients

  • 3/4 Tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 3/4 Tablespoon sugar
  • 1/3 cup hot milk
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 4 Tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • Filling
  • 5 Tablespoons softened butter, divided
  • 2 1/2 cups chopped, peeled, apples (I used 3 fancy and one golden delicious)
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons apple pie spice
  • 1 Tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cinnamon chips
  • Glaze
  • 4 ounces cream cheese (I used whipped cream cheese, because it's so smooth and airy, but any kind will do!)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 4 Tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, stir together the yeast, warm water, and 3/4 teaspoon of sugar, and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the hot milk, sugar, egg, butter, and salt. Add 2 cups of the flour and mix until smooth. Stir in the yeast mixture, then add in the remaining flour. Knead dough for 5-10 minutes, on either a lightly floured surface or in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook.
  3. Place the dough in a well greased bowl, cover, and let rise until it doubles in size, about 1-1 1/2 hours.
  4. When the dough is almost done rising, heat 1 Tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium- low heat. Add the diced apples and toss around for 2-3 minutes, then add the apple pie spice. Cook for an additional ten minutes or so until the apples are slightly softened. Remove from heat and set aside.
  5. When dough is doubled in size, punch it down and roll it out onto a lightly floured surface. Shape the dough into a rectangle, until it is about 1/4" thick, around 16 inch by 10 inches.
  6. Rub the remaining 4TB of softened butter over the entire surface of the dough.
  7. Mix together the cinnamon and brown sugar and sprinkle it evenly over the buttered dough.
  8. Spread the diced apples out over the top, leaving about 1/2-inch around the edges. Sprinkle with cinnamon chips.
  9. Coat the bottom of your baking pan with butter.
  10. Beginning with the 16-inch side, slowly roll up dough and pinch the edges together to seal. Slice into about 10 circles, approximately 1/2-1-inch thick. Place the rolls about 1/4-1/2" apart in the pan, cover, and rise until dough is doubled in size, about 45 minutes.
  11. Preheat oven to 350° and bake for 15-17 minutes until dough is golden brown and cooked through. Test with a toothpick if you're unsure.
  12. To make the glaze, mix together the cream cheese, powdered sugar, butter, and cinnamon. When the rolls have cooled a bit, spread over the top. Enjoy!
